What is the difference between daytime and evening
formal wear?
For a gentleman escorting a lady in a floor length gown
a cutaway is correct for daytime and a full dress suit
(white tie and tails) is appropriate for evening. To
escort a lady wearing a cocktail length dress a stroller
is appropriate before 6:00 PM and a tuxedo after 6:00
PM.
What if the ceremony is before 6:00 PM and the reception
is after 6:00 PM?
You will be technically wrong once whichever you wear.
Choose the outfit your most comfortable in. If you make
an appointment and come to Coleman's Tuxedos we'll dress
you up so you can decide in person which outfit you
prefer. These rules of etiquette are guidelines only
and it's up to you to decide how traditional or fashion
forward you want to be.
When is a white dinner jacket outfit appropriate?
A white dinner jacket outfit is appropriate in place
of a stroller or tuxedo between Memorial Day and Labor
Day in the temperate zones of the earth. It is always
deriguer in the tropics.
When should I start to choose the men's formal wear
for my wedding?
As soon a you determine where the wedding will be held
and the time of day you can begin choosing your formal
wear. At Coleman's Tuxedos we recommend an appointment
6 to 8 months before the wedding to take advantage of
the fullest selection and early booking specials.

taught us that the best formal wear results come from
in store selections where the entire inventory is available
for fitting and selection.

What is the origin of the tuxedo?
The tuxedo evolved from military uniforms of the 19th
century. The uniforms of the day had long tails and
were worn with the sashes of the various regiments.
This evolved into the civilian full dress suit (tails)
and the more familiar suit length tuxedo jacket which
is still worn with a cummerbund reminiscent of the regimental
sashes.
Who wore the first tuxedo and why is it called a
tuxedo?
P. Lorilard had the first formal suit made to his specifications
and wore it at his estate in Tuxedo Park, New York,
hence the name tuxedo. This innovative fashion was introduced
in the late 19th century.
